Fake drugs and meds are the last things anyone would want to worry about.

But recently, you may have seen these headlines going viral –

Chinese vaccine manufacturer Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology has been fined $1.32 billion by the gov for releasing hundreds of thousands of fake vaccines.

According to CNN and state media Xinhua, the company blended different batches of vaccine fluid, falsifying dates of production and including expired fluid into the batches.

Pharmaceutics is a billion dollar industry.

With loads of counterfeit meds hidden inside the industry itself, this gives access to potentially hurt millions of people and inflict serious damage to major pharmaceutical manufacturing brand names.

Are modern technologies up to speed to eliminate this issue of fake vaccines?

Well, let’s take a look at the tech we do have ready in 2018 –

  • Blockchain’s publicly decentralized ledger
  • End-to-end tracking surveillance for physical assets
  • Artificial intelligence and augmented reality syncing with blockchain
  • The ability to finally link physical items to digital ledgers with AI
  • Trained algorithms that can visually recognize anomalies, learn and differentiate material surface structures
  • The advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology

If we combine these technologies, it’d be insanely difficult to break countless safeguards and get fake drugs into the hands of the public.

And how would this tech combo look like?

  • Tracking ingredients from the beginning, authenticating, registering and then verifying them from the producers themselves
  • If any ingredient is flawed, expired or comes from an unverified source, it will be flagged and openly recorded and visible in the product’s history, allowing the issue to be addressed and solved while still in production
  • Since the entire history of the vaccine/medication will be publicly visible, shady behavior will decrease as no one wants to be obviously pinpointed for the wrongdoing
  • Tracking will be done via the surface structure of the veils or blister packs of the medication (no external stickers or chips needed)
  • For every stage of the item’s lifecycle, updates will be required to secure end-to-end tracking, similar to mail packages — with a transparent history log, accessible and verifiable by anyone at any time
  • All data to be accessible via a phone application, so even patients and consumers can double check the medication’s history before taking it
  • The ability for businesses to integrate in a modular way, taking advantage of the authentication, verification and tracking technology for their specific cases, building trust in their assets

We’ve got the tech at hand.

In fact, Veracity Protocol has already put together an AI + blockchain solution to make the above mentioned tech combo a living reality. The deep tech company strives to tackle the counterfeit issue across dozens of industries, including pharmaceuticals.
